Jealousy
In this portrait, I have used colour, shape, and composition to depict the complex emotion of jealousy. The composition, dominated by a large cool blue circle, creates a feeling of sadness, while the bright red of the background introduces anger. This is challenged by the background, which is a warm red, and creates a compositional tension that makes the space feel full. The use of green is a direct reference to the 'green-eyed monster' idiom. This tension culminates in the moustache, whose shape communicates a deep frown. Yet, its solid form conceals the mouth, symbolising the way jealousy often involves hiding true feelings of hurt behind a mask of anger.

Calm
In this portrait, I used soft shapes and a harmonious colour palette to create a feeling of calmness. The emotion is conveyed through soft, curved lines; the curved smile, the gentle arcs in the closed eyes and eyebrows create a peaceful expression. I chose a mostly cool and harmonious colour palette, with blues and purple, to enhance the calm feeling. I used a bright, warm yellow for the surrounding hair to create contrast with the cool colours and introduce an element of happiness. The symmetrical composition gives the portrait a sense of stability

Hopeful
In this portrait, I depicted hopefulness by combining conflicting visual shapes to create a gentle, bittersweet expression. The core of the emotion is conveyed through the contrast between the eyebrows and the mouth; I used a downward curve for the eyebrows, a shape typically associated with sadness, to suggest a sense of current hardship or worry. However, I deliberately contrasted this with a soft, curving smile and large eyes looking upwards. This combination is intended to show a positive outlook and a focus on the future, despite present challenges. To support this quiet and contemplative mood, I used a harmonious colour palette of yellow, green, and blue, which gives the portrait a calm and unified feeling.
